Northern

Historical information:

Northern Presbytery is one of the oldest Presbyteries of the United Church of Zambia and was mostly under the London Missionary Society. It is the mother of Luapula and Muchinga Presbyteries. From the LMS administration, the Presbytery was in 1945 handed over to the Church of Central Africa in Rhodesia (CCAR). And in 1958 when the CCAR joined other Copperbelt congregations it became part of the United Church of Central Africa in Rhodesia (UCCAR). It finally became part of the United Church of Zambia in 1965. The first Moderator was Rev Kenneth David Francis (the former Principal of the Kashinda Bible School). Other moderators that worked in the presbytery include the late Rev Noah Chulu, the late Rev M. Chintu, the late Rev Ndawa, from 1978 to 1980, the Rev L. D. Musyani, from 1981 to 1984, the late Rev Simon Nsangu Mutambo, from 1985 to 1988, Rev Belington Kabaso, from 1989 to 1995, the late Rev Samuel Mayani, 1996 only, Rev. L.C Sikazwe, from 1997 to 1999, Rev Mutale Mulumbwa, from 1999 to 2006, Rev. F. D. M. Silungwe, from 2006 to 2008, Rev. C. Nkonde, from 2009 to 2016 and the incumbent being Rev Maybin Mulenga

Administration:

The Presbytery is currently under the Pastoral charge and administration of the Rev Bishop Maybin Mulenga. And his Office is located in Kasama, the Provincial Capital. The Bishop’s office is manned by the Office Secretary Mrs. M. N. Mutambo, Book keeper Mr. L. M. Simpamba, and Office orderly Mr. J. Kafula.

The currently Presbytery Secretary is Rev. Charles Musonda and the current Presbytery treasurer is Mr. Justin. K. Sikazwe.

Health and Education:

The Presbytery supervises Senga Hill Primary and Secondary Schools

 

Socio-economic profile:

Languages spoken are Bemba, Tabwa, Lungu, Mambwe. Economic activities include industries such as business, farming and fishing. Others include Parastatals, non Governmental Organisations and Government Departments. The larger part of the presbytery is rural. From this scenario, it is evident that most of the members of the church do not have a steady flow of income such as a fixed monthly income because they are not in formal employment.

Developmental Projects:

The Presbytery has embarked on the construction of an office block with painting and electrification almost completed. The Construction of new Church buildings is being done in Chipoka, Kawimbe and Luwingu. Smaller Congregations doted across the presbytery are also constructing Church buildings.
