The Copperbelt Presbytery joined other Presbyteries in launching the Golden Jubilee celebration on 2nd March 2014. The launch was held in Kitwe at Mindolo United Church of Zambia.
The occasion was graced by Copperbelt Minister, Mr. Mwenya Musenge, who was accompanied by Kitwe District Commissioner, Mr. Elias Kamanga and Mindolo Ward area Councillor.
Mr. Musunge praised the United Church of Zambia for organising such a “wonderful event” and pledged Government’s support to the Church.
The march past was flagged off by Rev. Christopher Yamba, the Presbytery Secretary at 09.30 hours. The marchers had earlier assembled at the children’s play park in Buchi Township and the procession went through Chingola Road up to Mindolo UCZ where a Church service was held at 10 hours.
The preacher was Rev Canon Ian Knox from the Anglican Church in the United Kingdom. The theme for the worship was: “Declaring the Year of the Lord’s favour: 50 Years of the Union and the Gospel”. The reading came from Isaiah 6: 1 – 8.
Rev. Knox said the launch was an important occasion in the history of the Church ad emphasised that the coming together (unity) was in response to “the Lord’s call who Himself wished his flock to be one (in Christ)”.
He encouraged the congregants to continue looking to God for guidance even as the preparations for the grand celebrations in January 2015 were being awaited.
Rev. Knox was also particularly happy that he was a descendant of one of the founder members of the London Missionary Society (LMS) and that he considered himself part of the bigger UCZ family.
- The team from Synod who witnessed the launch of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations comprised Mr. Hastings Chiti (Synod Fundraising Chairperson), Mrs. Betty Chilunga (Golden Jubilee Committee member), Mr. Muhali Muhali (Synod Education Secretary) and Mr. Ng’ambi.
